Emily Brown and Matt Parrish
Looking for their first Canada West title since 2015, and 11th in program history, the Pandas Rugby program has announced their newest blue chip recruit. Former Team Alberta, and Central Alberta predator Emily Brown will join the Evergreen and Gold for the upcoming varsity season.
Having played rugby for just three years, Brown has already put together an impressive resume, including a Summer League City Championship, a national Rugby 7's silver medal, and a high school provincial silver medal.
Having experience playing both 15's and 7's will also greatly benefit the Pandas, who will be entering their third season of the Canada West Rugby 7's pilot project. The Pandas finished 5th last season in both 15's and 7's play.
"I am really excited to have Emily join the Pandas this fall. Emily was without doubt the best rugby player I saw this spring, helping her team to the High School provincial final." said Pandas head coach Matt Parrish. "I believe Emily has all the tools to push for a starting spot and make a big impact in her first year of U SPORTS women's rugby."
Brown will join a highly touted crop of young stars the Pandas brought in last season, including starters Athea Volpe, Lora Lee, Heidi Peake, and 2017 Canada West Rookie of the Year Courtney Holtkamp.
""I was happy to be accepted at the University of Alberta to continue my education, and thrilled to have been given the opportunity to pursue my sport at a university level." said Brown. "I am so excited to be a Panda!"
The Pandas will host two home conference games this season, welcoming the Lethbridge Pronghorns on September 9th, and the Calgary Dinos on October 4th. The Pandas will also host the 2018 Canada West Championship at Foote Field, with the conference semifinals on October 19th, and the Final on October 21st.
