Bears 2017 soccer schedule released

Defending conference and national champions to open season in Calgary against Mount Royal

By Connor Hood on June 15, 2017

The defending Canada West and U SPORTS Champion University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer team will play seven home conference games this season, as Canada West unveiled the 2017-18 men’s soccer schedule.

Len Vickery’s squad will play a total of 14 regular season games this season, beginning during the August 26-28 week with road matches scheduled against the Mount Royal Cougars and Calgary Dinos. The Bears home opener is scheduled for September 2nd, as they host the Lethbridge Pronghorns at Foote Field. Alberta will also host Saskatchewan, Trinity Western, UBC, MacEwan, Calgary and Mount Royal this season.

The Golden Bears are coming off one of the best seasons in program history. Alberta cruised to a 13-1-2 conference record, backed by Canada West record-setter Ajeej Sarkaria, and Wilson Challenge Trophy winner Niko Saler. The Golden Bears defeated the UBCO Heat, Trinity Western Spartans, and UBC Thunderbirds en route to their 11th conference title, before dispatching York, Cape Breton, and UQAM to capture their 5th national championship.
