Pandas, Griffins, and Cougars headline WSOC playoffs at Foote

Pandas to host Canada West quarter-final at Foote on Sunday

For a second-straight season, the Alberta Pandas soccer team will act as the host for a conference play-in-game, before playing the winner in the quarter-final this weekend.

The No. 6 Regina Cougars and No. 3 MacEwan Griffins will clash on Friday afternoon, with the No. 2 Pandas awaiting the winner on Sunday, with both games taking place at Foote Field.

Alberta finished second in the Prairie Division of Canada West with a 9-2-3 record, earning the right to host one of four quarter-final matches. Regina earned the final playoff spot in the division with a 3-9-2 record, while MacEwan placed third in the Pacific with a 9-3-2 mark.

The Griffins are no stranger to this format, as they also took part in the play-in-game last year at Foote Field. MacEwan eliminated Mount Royal in extra time, before stunning the Pandas in the quarter-final.

    Playoff history

For four-straight seasons, the Pandas have entered the playoffs coming off strong regular seasons, and have been the favourite more often than not in their playoff opener. However, the Alberta women have lost in three-straight quarter-final matches, including last year’s heartbreaking loss to MacEwan.

The 2018 version of the Pandas are much deeper and more experienced than previous rosters, however, featuring a handful of veteran starters including keeper Rebecca Reif, defender Kate Dunn, and forwards Karissa McNutt, Sydney Daines, and Nicole Palladino.

    Head to Head

MacEwan and Regina met once this season, with the Griffins earning an impressive 3-0 win.

The Pandas and Griffins never met, but Alberta did visit Regina in September, with the teams coming away with a scoreless draw.
