The University of Alberta Pandas tennis team is back in the national final, after dispatching the Dalhousie Tigers 7-0 in the semifinal of the 2017 Canadian University Tennis Championships. The Pandas are back in the championship match for the second time in three seasons, after winning a bronze medal in 2016.
The convincing win also extends the Pandas winning streak to eight consecutive matches, which runs all the way back to last years national semifinal. Alberta will face the Montreal Carabins in tomorrow's final.
The Pandas absolutely cruised through the doubles portion of the semifinal, sweeping the best of three matches with wins of 8-1, 8-1, and 8-0. That played carried over into the singles session, with fifth-year Panda Kristina Sanjevic racing out to a quick 3-0 lead in the No. 1 singles match. Alina Jurca (No. 3 singles), and Ashley Burke (No. 5) also took commanding leads in their singles matches, eventually winning 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
Sanjevic clinched the win for the Pandas, closing out her match 6-0, 6-3.
RJ Gan (6-0, 6-0), Maki Oba (6-2, 6-0), and Michaela Sherven (6-0, 6-1) also won their respective singles matches to clinch the Pandas 7-0 win.
The Pandas last won the national championship in 2014, winning silver (2015) and bronze (2016) since. Tomorrow's national final will get underway at 11:00 a.m. EST, and will be broadcast live at RadioTennis.com.
