CALGARY - The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas tennis teams continued their remarkable play in 2018/19, as each team captured their respective Prairie Regional Championship this weekend in Calgary.
The Golden Bears earned a 7-0 win over UBC Okanagan and a 5-2 win over Calgary, with the Pandas also earning a 5-2 win over Calgary. Both Alberta tennis teams will now head to Vancouver in two weeks, as they'll play the UBC Thunderbirds in the Western Regional Championship on March 2nd.
The Golden Bears had little trouble with UBCO on Friday afternoon, cruising past the Heat with convincing wins in both doubles and singles. None of the six singles matches went two sets, as the Bears dropped just 27 games over 10 sets.
Calgary provided a much tougher test. Alberta earned wins of 8-7 (7) and 8-2 to earn the doubles point, before Jeff James, Daniel Henschel, Connor Khademazad and Sidney Yap earned singles wins. Calgary took each of the first two singles matches in a much more competitive competition. The Golden Bears only loss came against Western, as they head into Western's with a 7-1 record.
The Calgary women also earned wins in the top two singles matches against the Pandas, but couldn't gain any traction in doubles. The Pandas earned wins of 8-5 and 8-1, with the third match stopped at 6-1.
The Pandas in the 3-6 singles matches led them to victory, as Katie Johnson, Samathan Chapman, Alina Jurca and Riyo Tomita earned victories.
