EDMONTON – The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Tennis teams will look to defend their titles as they host the Prairie Regional Championship this weekend at Saville Community Sports Centre.
The Prairie Regional Championships are just the first step on the path to the Tennis Canada University Championships, held in Toronto and Montreal in August. At the 2019 Championships, the Pandas came out victorious, winning their third national title in program history, while the Bears finished third, earning their fifth-straight national medal.
Hoping to take the prairies by fire, both teams will look to make it back to Nationals by defeating their titles on the prairies before moving onto the Western Regional Championship in March, in order to qualify for nationals.
"The Golden Bears and Pandas Tennis teams are looking forward to playing the Prairie Regionals this weekend,” said head coach Russ Sluchincki. “The competition will be tough with the added pressure of knowing that a team loss will mean the end of the season. I expect both teams will show up and play some great tennis."
Players to Watch
Making his return to the Prairie Regional Championships, second-year Golden Bears Jared Maclean is looking to make the same big impact he made in his rookie season. Maclean managed to not drop a set during last year’s championship.
Fourth-year Panda Riyo Tomita, will look to continue her dominance on the court in this weekend match ups. The experienced player from Hong Kong helped the Pandas to a National Championship in 2019, having not lost a match all season.
In doubles action, the young duo of second-years Quin Pon and Zack Perala will look to draw up some chemistry as they enter their first Regional Championships together. Meanwhile, the Pandas hope that Katie Johnson and Samantha Chapman can build upon their success from 2019 as they enter their sophomore year
Both teams will face the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, before taking on their provincial rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday.
