The Phaterpekar brothers defeated Matthew Oliver and Brent Moffat 8-5 in the top doubles match on Saturday, with Kiran beating Oliver 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match, while Neel earned a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over Mustang Alex Day.
Alberta won the inaugural Bearstang Cup in 2018, with Western capturing the title last January in London, Ontario. The Western Mustang men are the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference champions, and will represent Ontario at the 2020 University Tennis Championship in August.
Western opened with a 4-3 win over the Bears on Friday night at Saville, winning the doubles point with two of three match wins, followed by splitting the singles matches 3-3.
Despite Western winning the doubles point again on Saturday, with the Phaterpekar brothers winning the only doubles match for Alberta, the Bears responded in a big way in the singles section. Alberta captured five of the six singles matches, with Jared Maclean, Quin Pon, and Zack Perala all earning wins.
The Golden Bears and Pandas will return to action on February 14th, as they host the Prairie Regional Championship at Saville Community Sports Centre.
