Pole vaulters Paige Ridout, and Spencer Allen, as well as sprinter Leah Walkeden have all been named to the 2017 Canadian Universiade Track and Field roster. The trio of UAlberta student-athletes will compete in the 29th Summer Universiade Games, August 19-30, 2017 in Taipei City, Taipei.
Sean Baynton, who was recently announced as the newest University of Alberta Cross Country coach, was also named to the Canadian FISU coaching staff.
Both Ridout and Allen are coming off tremendous varsity seasons, capturing their respective gold medals at the 2017 U SPORTS Championship, hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Allen and Ridout also earned Canada West gold medals in pole vault, with Allen being named the Canada West Male Performer of the Meet. For his outstanding season, Allen was named the Golden Bears 2016-17 Track and Field MVP, while Ridout was named the 2017 winner of the Gabor Simonyi Trophy for outstanding contributions to Golden Bears and Pandas Field Events.
Walkeden last competed for the Pandas during the 2015-16 season, earning four Canada West medals, and helping the Pandas win their first of two-consecutive conference championships. She would follow up that performance with a national gold medal in the 4x200m relay.
All three of the UAlberta FISU athletes also competed in the 2017 Canadian Championship, held from July 5-9 in Ottawa, Ontario. Allen earned another medal in the men's pole vault, placing third with a jump of 5.30 meters. Ridout earned a seventh place finish in the senior women's vault with a jump of 4.00m, finishing one spot ahead of fellow Panda Meghan Lim (3.85m). Walkeden, meanwhile, finished 6th in the senior women's 100m dash.
Including Walkeden, Allen and Ridout, 16 of the 51 Track and Field Athletes are from Canada West schools.
The University of Alberta now has five confirmed athletes attending the Summer Universiade Game, as the three track and field athletes join Pandas soccer alumni Annalise Schellenberg and Jessie Brown.
