Fourth-year Golden Bears sprinter Austin Cole will compete in the mixed 4x400m relay at the upcoming IAAF World Championships, as Athletics Canada announced their athlete contingent on Friday.
The World Track and Field Championships will take place in Doha, Qatar, from Sept. 27 to Oct. 6. All events will be held at Doha’s Khalifa Stadium.
Cole is coming off one of the most dominant seasons in program history, as he captured three Canada West golds, three U SPORTS medals, and was named the Canada West and U SPORTS Track Athlete of the Year. His time of 32.89 in the men's 300m at the 2019 U SPORTS Championship also set a new U23 Canadian record.
For his outstanding season, the Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation student was named the 2019 Wilson Challenge Trophy as the University of Alberta's Male Athlete of the Year.
"It's great to see success coming out of Edmonton. I'm really happy to see the growth both Austin and his coach Rob Fisher have achieved this year and the past 4 years of working together," said UAlberta Track and Field head coach Wes Moerman. "They have done a great job together, and I know all of our athletes, assistant coaches and therapists are excited to see Austin represent Canada on the International stage again."
In total, 49 athletes will represent Canada in Qatar in September, including 25 men and 24 women. At the most recent world championships in 2017, Canada finished 14th with 30 points (two fifth, five sixth, two seventh and three eighth place finishes).
