Following a Canada West silver medal and U SPORTS fourth-place finish in 2018, the Golden Bears volleyball program has announced a loaded crop of recruits and transfers for the 2018/19 varsity season, as they look for their first conference and national titles since repeating in 2014 and 2015.

Highlighting the new Golden Bears are four members of the Canadian Junior/Youth National teams, including Braedon Friesen, Liam Huth, Cameron Kern, and Jordan Canham. Hunter Stewart (Nooks VB Club), Shae McIntyre (NAVC), and Lucas Dykstra (Lethbridge College) are also joining the eight-time U SPORTS Champions next season.

The class will join an already deep and talented Bears roster which includes 2018 team MVP Alex McMullin, First Team CW All-Star Taryq Sani, and several other returning starters.

2017 National Club Champion and MVP
"Cameron has an incredibly high volleyball IQ and projects this on the court.  He adds a very physical presence to his finesse driven position.  Cam is an addition from a long line of Jasper Place athletes.  Enrolled in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, he believes brushing one's teeth in the shower is far more efficient than the standard sink option."

    Jordan Canham
    Position – Outside Hitter
    Selection - Youth National Team
    Previous Club - Ottawa Mavericks
"Jordan is a late bloomer in the sport of volleyball and 'one to watch' as such, having a massive upside to his physical potential boasting characteristics of a strong work ethic and team-minded personality.  Jordan comes to Golden Bears Volleyball from Tagwi Secondary School, and is a Harry Potter reading dairy farmer."

    Hunter Stewart

2017 Canada Games finishing with a Silver Medal with Team AB
"Hunter has an innate sense for the game and is an incredibly efficient athlete.  Though a smaller outside, he packs a mean punch and is pound for pound a very strong player.  Hunter is also another Golden Bears addition from Jasper Place enrolling in Arts, and is terrified of Atlantic Crabs."

    Shae McIntyre
    Position – Outside
    Previous Club – NAVC
    2018 4A Provincial Champion
"Shae is a multi-faceted well rounded volleyball player, competitor and leader who will make an excellent addition to our program.  It will be the first time we've had two brothers on the team since Jason & Mike DeRocco.  We look forward to seeing Shae & Carter compete side by side, but know Shae will create his own unique identity and contribution to the squad.  When asked to describe himself Shae replied: "I just follow the way of the road".

    Lucas Dykstra
    Position - Middle Blocker
    Previous Club - Lethbridge College
"Though we have had few transfers in the past, we are excited to bring someone in from Lethbridge as there is a consistent flow of talented athletes from the region.  Lucas will add much needed depth to our middle squad in the coming season.  Lucas in enrolled in the faculty of Arts, and used to be football kicker."
