George Hobern named to Team Canada for 2019 Universiade

    Third-year Golden Bears middle George Hobern has been chosen to represent Team Canada at the 2019 Summer Universiade

    Third-year Golden Bears middle George Hobern has been chosen to represent Team Canada at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy, as U SPORTS unveiled the Canadian contingent on Wednesday.

    Hobern has spent parts of five seasons with the Golden Bears, completing his third year of eligibility in 2018/19. The Sherwood Park, Alberta native finished second on the Bears with 0.80 blocks per set last season, and was named a U SPORTS Tournament All-Star at nationals at Laval. 

    Canada finished in 16th at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei with 13 medals (four gold, five silver, four bronze). This year’s games will run from July 3-14, with some competitions beginning on July 2 and will feature over 9,300 athletes from 128 countries. 

    The Opening Ceremony will be held on July 3 at 3:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 p.m. local time). The full schedule is available here.

    The Games will run from July 3rd to July 14th, with volleyball going from July 5-13. . Canada finished 16th in 2017 with 13 medals in Taipei City. This year's event will feature over 9,300 athletes from 128 countries.
