Casault, Jarman and Otto named to Universiade Roster

Casault, Jarman and Otto to represent Team Canada at Universiade Games in Taipei

By Connor Hood on August 8, 2017

Three members of the 2016-17 Canada West Champion Alberta Pandas volleyball team have been named to the 2017 Canadian Universiade Roster. Recently graduated student-athletes Meg Casault and Kacey Otto, as well as sophomore Vanessa Jarman will represent the Red and White, August 19-30 in Taipei City, Taipei. Pandas head coach Laurie Eisler will also represent the University of Alberta in Taipei, acting as the Canadian women’s volleyball team lead.

Both Casault and Otto are coming off tremendous varsity careers, with their names being firmly etched in the Pandas program record books. Casault finished her Pandas career with a Canada West record 1,321 kills, as well as a program-record 1,513 points. Casault was also a four-time conference all-star, a three-time U SPORTS All-Canadian, and was the 2016-17 Canada West and U SPORTS Most Valuable Player.

This isn’t the first time Casault has represented team Canada at the FISU Games, helping the red and white earn a sixth-place finish during the 2015 Universiade in South Korea.  She has also spent time with the Canadian National ‘B’ Team, and spent this past summer training with the National ‘A’ Team.

Otto, meanwhile, set the Canada West ace record in her final season with the Pandas, ending her five-year career with 175. She also sits second all-time in program history in digs (1,077), third in points (1,210), and fourth in kills (948). She was named a Canada West and U SPORTS Tournament All-Star last season. This will be Otto’s first appearance at the Summer Universiade Games.

Jarman is coming off her first season with the Pandas, in which she was named a Canada West all-rookie team member. She finished her rookie campaign with 104 kills, 25 digs, and a team-leading 66 blocks. In April, Jarman was named the University of Alberta's Female Rookie of the Year.

Danielle Brisebois (UBC), Alissa Coulter (UBC), Nikki Cornwall (TWU), and Aidan Lea (UBC Okanagan) are the other Canada West representatives on the 2017 roster.

The Canadian team will open the tournament on August 20th against the United Arab Emirates, before playing Switzerland (Aug. 21), Cyprus (Aug 22), and Argentina (Aug. 23 & 24).
