For the sixth time in program history, and first time since 2010, the University of Alberta Pandas will host the U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship, March 15-17, 2019 at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. The UBC Thunderbirds (Men’s Soccer), Ottawa Gee-Gees (Women’s Soccer), and Laval Rouge et Or (Men’s Volleyball), were also successful in their bid for national championships for the 2018/19 season, which was announced by U SPORTS on Thursday.

The 2019 Women’s Volleyball Championship will be the second-ever national championship hosted by the Saville Community Sports Centre. The Tournament will feature 11 matches over a three-day span, all of which will be played in the SCSC's Competition Gym. All five previous times the Pandas have hosted this competition, it was held at the University of Alberta's Main Gymnasium.

"Following the very successful 2017 U SPORTS FOG Men's Volleyball Championship, the University of Alberta is grateful to be given the opportunity to host the women's championship in 2019.” said University of Alberta Athletic Director Ian Reade. “Fans of U SPORTS women's volleyball will be treated to a fabulous event at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. In addition, a top quality webcast will make the event available to fans, friends, and alumni of all the programs from around the world."

Of the previous five times the Pandas have hosted the Championship, four have ended in gold medals won for the host institution.

"It's exciting news for the Pandas Volleyball Team and the local volleyball community to have the privilege to host the 2019 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship,” said Pandas Volleyball head coach Laurie Eisler. “We look forward to hosting the top teams in Canada at our world class volleyball venue at Saville Community Sports Centre, and know the great sport fans of Edmonton and Alberta will rally around this event.  It's a special experience for our athletes to have the opportunity to compete for a National Championship in their own gym, and we are already counting down the days to March 2019!"

The 2019 Women’s Volleyball Championship will mark the fourth national championship hosted by the University of Alberta since 2017, including Track and Field (2017), Men’s Volleyball (2017), and Curling (2018).
