On the 10th anniversary of the merger, it is clear that priorities that informed Camrose Lutheran College and later Augustana University College are still important. This is perhaps most visible in the work of the Chester Ronning Centre and the Augustana Chaplaincy.
Ronning Centre Director David Goa
The Chester Ronning Centre is perhaps Canada’s only gathering point in a public university where scholars, students, and community members gather to discuss important issues and concerns at the intersection of religion and public life. Founding director David J. Goa has developed a broad range of partnerships within Campus Alberta and with universities, civil society organizations and religious institutions across Canada and around the world. From an initial offering of 10 public events, the Centre now supports an average of 130 events per year addressing many of the most difficult issues facing liberal democratic societies. Four to five thousand people attend each year.
In order to honour the Lutheran heritage of Chaplaincy at Augustana, respect the non-sectarian nature of the University of Alberta and fulfill Augustana’s tradition of educating the whole person, which includes a spiritual dimension, a novel partnership was established between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and the university. A separate Chaplaincy Council provides financial support for Pastor Craig Wentland’s work as chaplain, and the university supports his role as an instructor in religious studies and contributor to non-denominational counselling services.

The Augustana Chaplaincy responds to the needs of students, staff and the community in two ways: it provides opportunities for community service and leadership development, interfaith learning activities, and non-denominational counselling; and it provides a place of Christian worship and community. During the academic year there are approximately 250 student contact points with chaplaincy activities each week. Augustana Chaplaincy also provides a leadership opportunity each year for five to seven student chaplains who provide peer ministry and organize numerous programs and small group activities.
