Augustana climbing coaches will work with kids in small groups where they will learn climbing technique and safety and engage in climbing games and activities. You can expect your child to have a fun time getting lots of exercise while becoming proficient climbers with the help of our climbing coaches!
All necessary equipment including harnesses, ropes, hardware, and chalk is provided as part of the program at no extra cost.
Each child should come prepared with clean running shoes or climbing shoes and should wear gym shorts or pants. They should also bring a water bottle.
What kind of climbing?
When top roping, climbers are secured from above by rope and will never fall more than a couple of inches.
Bouldering is without ropes but is limited to very short heights so that falls are protected by crash mats and spotters.
Belaying is the climbing term used to denote the safety mechanisms employed by the climber's partner on the ground - our coaches will belay younger climbers while older and more experienced climbers will have the opportunity to belay each other. The skills learned here at Augustana are applicable at other indoor climbing gyms and outdoors too!
The safety of your child is our first priority. Each of our coaches is trained in climbing wall safety and is certified in First Aid and CPR.
All participants are expected to abide by these rules:
- Remove watches, bracelets, rings, necklaces, and large earrings
- Always wear clean running shoes or climbing shoes
- Tie back long hair
- Avoid horseplay and do not run in the climbing wall area
- Follow all instructions given by climbing wall supervisors
