Experiments in Character Mask: Acting from the Outside In with Professor Kevin Sutley
Contemporary acting technique is based largely on the ground breaking work of Constantin Stanislavsky who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, used the new field of psychology to examine how characters behaved. Since then, this "inside-out" approach to characterization has been the prevailing methodology used by stage and film actors alike. But what happens if instead of beginning with what is going on inside a character's head, we start by exploring how a character moves, or dresses, or even with what the character's face looks like? Can young actors use masks to gain access to a character's emotion and physicality in a way that psychological exploration does not so easily allow? Can these investigations then lead back to a deeper understanding of that character's motivation and psychology?
