Camrose Composite - CHORAZZ!

Wetaskiwin Composite Concert Choir

The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus is pleased to announce the upcoming choral concert, With Glowing Hearts, Sunday, April 9, 3:00 pm at the Augustana Faith & Life Chapel. Tickets: $20 (adults); $15 (students/seniors/children). Available at the door or from choir members.

We invite you to join us for With Glowing Hearts, the Canadiana-inspired spring concert from The Augustana Choir. The concert will take you on a journey across our country as we welcome weary immigrants ("Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveller" -Nathaniel Dett), glimpse life in a Newfoundland outport ("Feller from Fortune" - Hary Somers), and celebrate life in Alberta ("Alberta Bound" - Paul Brandt/Jennifer McMillan). The choir will also present a premiere performance of a fantastic new work by the sometimes-outrageous Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. Together with six other Canadian university choirs, we commissioned Jakko to write a significant new work for us. We welcome you to our premiere of "Seven Last Words"-an off-the-wall and entertaining musical and etymological delight.

As a special treat, The Augustana Choir is thrilled to welcome the choirs of Camrose and Wetaskiwin Composite High Schools (conducted by Tom Spila and Heidi Schwonik respectively). These two choirs will each sing a few of their own songs and join The Augustana Choir for a performance of "Add Your Voice"-a piece we commissioned from the New North Collective, written on the theme of reconciliation-a perfect complement to a concert celebrating Canada at 150.

Under the dynamic direction of John Wiebe, the Augustana choirs build on a choral legacy of over 100 years. The choirs are known for their exquisite sound and attention to detail with national and international tours, conference performances and CD recordings to their credit. You won't want to miss hearing these ensembles.

John Wiebe, PhD, is an award-winning conductor, pianist, educator, adjudicator and clinician based out of Edmonton, Alberta. He conducts the choirs at the University of Alberta, Augustana campus, is the Artistic Director of the Edmonton Youth & Children's Choirs and the President of Choral Canada.
