From staff vs. student hockey to a student life video contest, this week (and this Weekly!) really does have it all! Look below to find information on April's Student Academic Conference, opportunities for current students to get involved in campus life and host prospective students over welcome weekend, a number of great performances and events, info sessions, undergraduate research opportunities, contests, award nominations, and as always, campus rec highlights and the cafeteria menu!

  • Thinking about participating in the Student Academic Conference on April 16? It's a great way to gain experience and learn new skills! Register at by March 25. If you aren't interested in presenting, come and support your peers!
  • Professor Kevin Sutley will serve as interim chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Humanities from July 1, 2019 to June 20, 2020. Congratulations, Kevin, and thank you to Alex Carpenter who will be completing his term as chair on June 30 and then will be taking a well-deserved leave/sabbatical in 2019-20!
  • Research and intersections of gender (RIG) has just been announced as one of three U of A Signature Areas and a RIG consultation will be held on April 10 from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Roger Epp Room for researchers at Augustana to join a conversation about research at the intersections of gender in your area. Open to all students, staff and faculty. RSVP here.
  • Students! Don't forget to include the T2202A (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) and complete Schedule 11 when you file your income tax return! It lets the CRA know you're a student and shows how much you paid in tuition last year. Additionally, if you received any scholarships, awards, or bursaries in 2018, you need to report this information to the CRA, which can be found on your T4A. Both documents can be downloaded from Bear Tracks > Financials. If you have any questions about filing your tax return as a student, please consult your tax professional.
  • Augustana is hosting a Student Life Awards Video Contest! Send your videos showcasing student life in for a chance to win prizes and for your video to be shown at the Student Life Awards in April!   • Attend the India Tour Course Info Session TODAY at 3:00 pm! See poster below for details.

  • It's awards season! And we're not talking about the Oscars. Nominate someone today for the Student Leadership Awards, the Augustana Students' Association Sponsored Leadership Awards (for students, staff and faculty, and clubs), the Augustana Faculty Research Award, and/or the Student Award for Library Research. Deadlines are SOON! Nominate before Thursday (March 14) for the student leadership awards, and Friday (March 15) for the ASA awards and Faculty Research Award!
  • Drop in hours for the Augustana Climbing Wall (located on the stage behind the gym, with door access to the right of Monica's) are Sundays: 7 to 10 pm, Mondays: 7:30 to 10 pm, Wednesdays: 7 to 10 pm, and Thursdays: 7 to 10 pm.
  • The Winter SAC is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16-no meetings or classes will take place on that day.

The rescheduled session to discuss the University's EDI Strategic Plan, provided by Logan Mardhani-Bayne, has been set for next Tuesday (March 19) at 12:30 pm. Please RSVP if you plan to attend this session so that we can ensure we have enough space to accommodate all.

  • Are you a student interested in living and working with your peers in a theme community? Attend the info session and open house tonight!
  • The Annual Staff vs. Student Hockey Game is this Thursday! There's still time to register, so click here if you'd like to play, or simply come out to cheer the teams on!
  • The Management Society is hosting local business owner and manager, Ross Penner of Battle River Landscaping: Supply and Design. Come and listen to his experiences about the importance of business connections and growth. Join us on Thursday (March 14), at 6:30 in AU F-305. Snacks provided!
  • Attend an English Program Info Session on March 15 (and get free pizza)!
  • Next Tuesday, professor Geraint Osborne will be presenting his Distinguished Professorial Lecture on cannabis normalization and the end of prohibition in Canada. Click here for more information and registration details.

  • Augustana's very own Conference on Undergraduate Research and Innovative Teaching (ACURIT) is taking place May 14 and 15. The Dean's office has generously offered to cover registration for any Augustana students, faculty, and staff interested in attending! Visit the ACURIT page for more information and to register (simply submit the form and ignore the payment page).
  • Kim Misfeldt is hosting a German Movie Showing every Monday evening at 7 pm until April 8. Ask Kim for showing details, or simply show up to be pleasantly surprised!

Onions contain an unstable chemical known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. This chemical becomes airborne when cutting an onion. If you chew gum while cutting onions, it will prevent tears by forcing you to breathe through your mouth.

  • Check out a few Undergraduate Research Initiatives!
    • The URI is recruiting volunteers for the 2019-2020 Peer Undergraduate Research Liaison (PURL) program. PURLs assist URI with a variety of activities, including awareness-raising, event planning, program delivery, and advising students about research opportunities. Undergrads in any year and any discipline are welcome to apply. The deadline is March 25!
    • Spectrum is currently recruiting undergraduate & graduate student editors for the 2019-2020 academic year. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in undergraduate research to learn about the publication and peer review process. Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply. The deadline is March 25!
  • You're invited to the 7th Annual Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Conference in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
    • March 29, 2019 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. | 1-hour sessions | North Campus
    • This one-day conference showcases some of the best work in feminist, gender, and sexuality studies that has recently been produced by undergraduate students at the University of Alberta. We invite you to attend the whole day or as many of the 1-hour sessions as you are able.
    • This conference is designed to encourage dialogue, conversation, and the exchange of ideas. We will be holding discussion sessions after each presentation.
