Happy Wednesday, and welcome back from Reading Week! Did you miss last week's Weekly? Of course you didn't…we know it was the highlight of the whole break!

Today's issue is short and sweet, covering information on opportunities to share your undergraduate research, tax and wellness tips, a new section for library information, event and performance details, Vikings updates (with photos!), and more!

Have a great week, everyone.

  • Check out the North Campus section below for some excellent undergraduate research opportunities, including the opportunity to attend a conference on undergraduate research (where some of our very own Augustana students are presenting!) as well as how to submit to the University of Alberta's undergraduate research journal, Spectrum.
  • It's Tax Season! Make sure to stay vigilant and keep an eye out for tax fraud. Remember, the CRA will never email you demanding payment or financial information, and will never call you asking for prepaid credit cards or threatening arrest. Don't divulge sensitive information over the phone or email, and think before you click. For more information, check out this article.
  • Speaking of vigilance, make sure to practice good hygiene and wash your hands with soap and water often, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water isn't available, to keep from catching any respiratory virus. Also, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, sneeze or cough into your sleeve, and stay home if you're sick. For more information on how to keep healthy, visit the UAlberta Health Recommendations website.
  • Check out our new Library Information section below!
  • Within the week:

We usually wear green on St. Patrick's Day, but did you know that green isn't actually St. Patrick's color? In fact, blue was the symbolic color of St. Patrick's order! So go forth, choose to be historically accurate and wear blue instead of green on March 17! But beware that you might get pinched.

Do you want to share a fun fact? Send it (and your source) to augcomm@ualberta.ca!

  • Please note that the SingAble-sponsored Music Heals Day Community Sing that was scheduled for this Saturday, March 14, at the Rosehaven Care Centre, has been postponed. In celebration of March as music therapy awareness month, rather than offering an opportunity for community singing, the music division warmly invites you to visit the music suite to sample some exquisite homemade cupcakes that would have been served at our Music Heals Day event. It is our SingAble hope that we will be able to join our voices in praise of the power of music at a community sing at some point in May. Stay tuned!

Hockey

Men's hockey won against SAIT on Saturday during an exciting Game 2 of the playoffs, leaving the series tied at 1-1. The Vikings were at SAIT last week for Game 3 and suffered a devastating 6 to 2 loss. We congratulated fifth-year athletes Lukas Biensch, Joren Johnson, Cody Fiala, Evan Warmington and Curtis Skip on their tremendous Vikings Hockey careers and thank them for their exceptional service to our community during their time here!

Men's Basketball Championships

The 2020 ACAC Men's Basketball Championships wrapped up on Saturday with SAIT taking gold, Ambrose University taking silver and Keyano College taking bronze. While the Vikings lost game 6 to a tough match against Lethbridge, the community spirit of the weekend was exceptional. Thank you to everyone on campus who assisted with producing a great ACAC event!

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team had a remarkable weekend in Medicine Hat at Conference Championships, making it to Saturday but then taking a loss in a tight game with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

Wait…There's More Curling!

From March 11 to 15 the Women's Curling team will represent at Nationals in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. They are going as the number one team representing the ACAC. Check out Coach Roger's Tweets for end-to-end coverage (follow him on @RogerGalenza).

Student vs. Staff Ski Relay Race

Staff Wins!

The Vikings Nordic Club hosted the first annual Student vs. Staff Ski Relay this weekend and the staff took the win! The staff came out on top by 47 seconds. The Gibson Ski Library gear was instrumental in helping the students participate in the race, and over 30 students showed up to the event! Thanks to Gerhard, Robert, Greg, Ian, and Glen for joining in on the relay on the staff team (and especially to Glen for sponsoring the after-party)!
