Program Information

The Augustana Faculty offers:

  • A Major in Environmental Science (BSc)
  • A Major in Environmental Studies (BA) in one of two streams:
    • General stream
    • Outdoor Education stream
  • A Minor in Environmental Studies is also available.

Learning Outcomes

As researchers, students will be able to:

  1. Apply current methods of inquiry in environmental science/studies.
  2. Formulate testable scientific hypotheses based on existing theories, design experiments to test such hypotheses, analyze data accurately, and present the results of such experiments appropriately and effectively.
  3. Develop and execute appropriate sampling techniques to draw inferences about environmental processes and broader scientific and social theories.
  4. Recognize the limitations of methods used in environmental science/studies and develop skills to overcome these limitations.
  5. Choose appropriate mathematical and statistical approaches to analyze environmental data.

As communicators, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, regarding knowledge of environmental science/studies, its methodologies, key concepts, and issues to both professional and lay audiences.

As thinkers, students will be able to:

  1. Know the fundamental physical and biological principles that govern natural processes.
  2. Describe the manner in which earth systems have been modified by human activity over time.
  3. Integrate information from across the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities in the context of complex environmental problems.
  4. Identify environmental problems, assess key drivers, evaluate problem-solving strategies, and develop multidisciplinary solutions.
  5. Use contemporary tools and techniques for studying environmental issues.
  6. Recognize and respect cultural differences regarding natural resource use and management.
  7. Apply appropriate environmental ethics as an environmental practitioner in the workplace, as a candidate for an advanced degree, and/or as a citizen.
