Common First Year Experience

The first year of university for students is similar for both degree programs offered (4-year Bachelor of Music and 4-year Bachelor of Arts).  Music students take several music courses in their first year, including courses in music theory, world music, and aural and sightsinging.  As well, students are enrolled in music lessons and ensembles (applied music).  Lesson lengths are 1/2 hour, 3/4 hour, and 1 hour, depending on the background of the individuals.

All Bachelor of Music students are required to audition and to take one hour lessons in a primary instrument.  Current instruments offered include classical voice, classical piano, classical guitar, pipe organ, all brass, flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, and violin.

All music students are required (B.Mus.) or encouraged (B.A.) to take English literature courses or second language courses in their first year as well as other non-music courses, schedules permitting.
