Why Study Philosophy?
Thinking clearly, consistently, and with an understanding of historical and cultural influences is essential for success in most careers. Philosophy's goal is to teach careful thinking by considering both traditional problems as well as contemporary issues, with the intent of giving the student the tools and experience to make his or her own decisions.
Either by itself or in conjunction with another discipline or profession, philosophy is one of the most practical pursuits possible.
Philosophy at Augustana Faculty
Augustana's philosophy program provides a strong basis in historical and critical methods. We are rooted in the continental tradition, but with a strong historical emphasis. Our classes are small; our office doors are open; our concern is that students do the best work they possibly can, and that they find ways to be philosophers, rather than to just do philosophy.
