Norwegian Focus, Scandinavian Scope

Augustana offers one of Canada's few university programs in Scandinavian Studies with a focus on the Norwegian language courses, and it is the only Canadian university campus with Norwegian roots. When you learn Norwegian, the door is open to two other languages and cultures as well, since Norwegian, Swedish and Danish are mutually intelligible.

Students can take a wide variety of literature and culture courses covering:

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Norway
  • Sweden

The literature and culture courses are taught in English, and are open to all Augustana students.

Outside the Classroom

Students can participate in extracurricular activities such as weekly Norwegian language lunches, film evenings, and off-campus excursions sponsored by the student Nordisk Klubb. Students from all disciplines can also take advantage of summer and semester study abroad opportunities in Norway.

Historical Significance

Scandinavia is well known for its contributions in the areas of conflict resolution, gender equality and the promotion of indigenous and human rights. This region has also produced numerous authors, politicians, explorers, musicians, and other cultural figures who have had a major impact on their fields, including:

  • Hans Christian Andersen (Author of "The Little Mermaid")
  • Gro Harlem Brundtland (Former Norwegian P.M., Former head of WHO)
  • Edvard Grieg (Composer)
  • Henrik Ibsen (Playwright)
  • Søren Kierkegaard (Philosopher)
  • Stieg Larsson (Author of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy)
  • Snorri Sturluson (Icelandic historian, poet, and politician)

If you are interested in any of these issues or cultural figures, Augustana's Scandinavian program has something to offer you.

International Relations

Increased international attention to the Arctic region has led to a reassessment of relations between Canada and the Nordic region. In this age of international interdependence, there is a need for increased cultural and economic exchange between Canada and the five Nordic lands (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden). The Augustana Scandinavian Studies program offers courses designed to aid students in building expertise in these areas.
