Program Information

Augustana Faculty offers:

  • A major in Sociology (BA)
    • 6 credits in AUSOC 101, 103, and 105
    • AUSOC 232 and one of AUSOC 233 and 377
    • 6 credits from AUSOC 236, 339, and AUSTA 213
    • 3 credits from AUSOC 437 and 439
    • 21 additional credits in Sociology, including at least 9 at the 300 level or above

Students intending to apply for graduate schools are advised, but not required, to take a minimum of 48 credits in Sociology.

  • A minor in Sociology (BA, BSc, BMgt, BMus)
    • 6 credits from AUSOC 101, 103 and 105
    • 3 credits from AUSOC 232, 233 and 377
    • 9 additional senior credits in Sociology

Learning Outcomes

Our students are critical thinkers, who can:

  • Utilize different perspectives and approaches within sociology to assess complex social phenomena
  • Read, evaluate, assess and compare a variety of types of sources and evidence
  • Understand and effectively contribute to important and contested social issues using sociological reasoning
  • Develop and offer creative answers and solutions to pressing social issues and debates

Our students are competent researchers, who can:

  • Conduct independent research using a variety of sources, approaches, and methods, emphasizing qualitative approaches
  • Synthesize and analyze existing literature on relevant topics
  • Construct convincing, analytically complex and evidence supported arguments

Our students are, effective communicators, who can:

  • Utilize clear, concise and effective written, oral, visual and electronic techniques to communicate complex ideas
  • Work collaboratively with peers to generate analytical insight
  • Articulate and demonstrate sociological thinking and knowledge through class discussions and oral presentations

Our students are engaged social participants who

  • Understand the complex and intersecting social, cultural, political and economic contexts within which they live
  • Appreciate the importance of social justice and diversity issues in our increasingly globalized world
  • Are aware of contemporary and enduring social issues on local, national and international levels
