I want to take a Directed Studies Course...now what?

  1. Contact your professor to seek approval and, if received, build a syllabus together. The professor will need to decide if it will be a capstone course and if you will be presenting at the Student Academic Conference.
  2. The instructor will email the syllabus and capstone/Academic Conference information to Student Academic Services at augsas@ualberta.ca. Student Academic Services will obtain the necessary permissions, create the class, and enrol you in the course.

In some cases, professors will recruit a promising student who would likely benefit from a directed studies course. In most cases, however, you are responsible for identifying a potential topic and approaching a professor whose interests overlap with this topic. Beginning this process in the semester prior to your desired start date will give both you and your potential supervisor enough time and the opportunity to discuss the proposal comfortably.

Professors will evaluate the potential for supervising your directed studies course in terms of time availability, research expertise, and alignment with their research program.
