Option 1: Process in which Instructor Meets with Student
In cases of obvious plagiarism, it may be most effective for instructors to meet with students to discuss the infraction and carry out a suitable sanction, without having the student meet with the Associate Dean, Academic (ADA). Note that in the Augustana Faculty, the ADA acts as delegate of the Dean in matters of inappropriate academic behaviour. This option is suitable only in cases of plagiarism when it appears to be the student’s first infraction (a list of inappropriate behaviour is available here), and in cases where the instructor feels the situation would be resolved by the student re-submitting the assignment with a grade reduction.
- Identify the nature of the plagiarism offence, and decide whether the situation warrants a meeting between the offending student and the ADA, or if it can be resolved by meeting with the student personally through an instructor-led approach.

- Contact the ADA. If you decide that the process can be effectively carried out through an instructor-led approach, inform the ADA of the infraction. Include details on the nature of the offence, your planned approach, and the sanction you plan to implement. The ADA must be informed of the infraction and your planned approach before your meeting with the student.
- Set up a meeting with the student to discuss the offence. Inform the student that an ombudsperson is available to them should they so choose, and they alternatively have the right to meet with the ADA. During your meeting, inform the student that the ADA will be filing the offence and issuing a letter. Tips on scheduling and carrying out the meeting are available here.

- Follow up with the ADA. After meeting with and informing the student of the sanction, fill out the Inappropriate Academic Behavior Reporting Form, and submit it to the ADA. The ADA will file the offence and issue a letter to the student.
