The academic staff collective agreement between the University of Alberta and Association of Academic Staff University of Alberta (AASUA) expired on June 30, 2020. After a period of delay from winter 2020 primarily due to the current global pandemic and state of emergency, the two parties will open negotiations on Thursday, November 12 with an exchange of proposals.

This new round of collective bargaining between the university and AASUA occurs at a time of unprecedented challenges in the university’s history. The bargaining will address many terms and conditions of employment, including compensation. Through negotiation, the university will seek an agreement that is fair, equitable, responsible, sustainable, and that supports excellence.

The university has retained Geoff Tierney, an experienced academic labour negotiator, as the lead negotiator of the university’s bargaining committee. Mr. Tierney also led the committee during the 2018 round of negotiations with AASUA. The university’s bargaining committee negotiates on behalf of the U of A’s Board of Governors and also includes:

  • Kathleen De Long, Executive Director (Library and Museums) and Deputy Chief Librarian
  • Joseph Doucet, Dean, Alberta School of Business
  • Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell, Dean, Faculty of Science
  • Brian Pearson, Senior Faculty Relations Officer
  • Michelle Strong, Director, Faculty Relations
  • Wendy Rodgers, Deputy Provost

The university is committed to providing timely and relevant information on collective bargaining. Follow collective bargaining progress here on this webpage, and through the weekly FYI information digest distributions to employees.
