Title: Ecology of fear in Pest Management.

Abstract:

Entomology Lecture: Ecology of Fear Across Scales

At the University of Alberta, Edmonton, on Thursday, March 12, 2020.
Refreshments at 3:30 pm, Lecture at 4:00-5:00 pm in CW-410, Biological Sciences Building.

Some of the greatest challenges in ecology today relate to connecting pattern to process across scales. I will examine this using the example of scaling predator prey interactions from the individual level to within and between populations. At the individual level, prey must balance acquiring resources with avoiding being eaten themselves. Within a population, this balance can be affected by genetic and parental effects, and across populations the landscape in which populations are found impacts defensive prey behavior. Sources of variation at each level influence their ultimate integration.

Strickland Memorial Lecture: Ecology of Fear in Pest Management

At the University of Alberta, Edmonton, on Friday, March 13, 2020.
Refreshments at 3:30 pm, Lecture at 4:00-5:00 pm in TBA.

Conventional wisdom says that predators function in ecosystems by eating prey, but scientists are learning that prey responses to predators, so called "fear responses" are just as important. In this talk I will explore three facets of predator-prey ecology that are key for achieving our goal of utilizing fear effects to maximize pest control in crop protection. These include which prey life stages are most affected by predation risk? Are there lasting effects of fear or effects that carry over across stages? And, lastly, what cues do prey use to detect predators and can we manipulate them?
