J Lorne Braithwaite is an entrepreneurial developer, visionary and industry leader with specialized expertise in mixed-use development, regional mall real estate and retailing across Canada. Over the years Lorne has been an active international commercial developer in California (US), London (England) and Dubai (UAE).
Appointed President & CEO of BUILD TORONTO in April 2009 and until his departure in 2013, Lorne brought his in-depth industry knowledge to lead the organization in creating value for the City through real estate and helping redefine City-Building.
Prior to joining BUILD TORONTO, Lorne was Founder, Chairman, President and CEO of Cambridge Shopping Centres (now Ivanhoe Cambridge), where he amassed 40 large enclosed malls after leading the leveraged management buyout in 1980. Internationally, Lorne served as the Worldwide Chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centres from 1995 to 1996. He was President of the Canadian Institute of Public and Private Real Estate Companies (formerly CIPREC, now REALpac) from 1995 to 1997.
Today, Lorne chairs the Investment Advisory Committee for the Canada Post Pension Plan and is a Director of Enbridge Inc. and past Director of Bata Shoe Corporation Worldwide. Lorne also currently chairs Eva’s Phoenix Capital Campaign, which will fund a new facility for full-time residency for 50 homeless youth. Eva’s Initiatives is a not-for-profit registered Canadian charity working with homeless and at-risk youth in the Toronto GTA region. He is a recipient of the University of Alberta Alumni Recognition Award, the University of Alberta’s Wall of Fame Award, and the NAIOP 2005 Award in Real Estate Excellence - Lifetime Achievement Honouree. Lorne holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.
