Funding

Students participating on an official University of Alberta exchange program remain enrolled at the U of A for the duration of the exchange and are therefore eligible for all UofA student awards and bursaries as well as Canada and Alberta student loans. In addition, there are several scholarships and awards available specifically to help fund exchanges, either in general or to a specific destination.

The following is a partial list of potential funding resources available to students participating on an official University of Alberta exchange program. Students may be eligible for additional awards not listed below. Business Funding/Awards

 

Business Exchange Association's Travel Award Program

BCom students participating in a Fall/Winter International Exchange approved by the Alberta School of Business Undergraduate Programs Office are eligible to apply for a subsidy to help defray the costs of exchange. This funding is not guaranteed for every student, however, and will be granted according to criteria such as destination, duration of program, and other factors. Students must register with the Business Exchange Association (BEA) in order to be eligible. This award is part of the International Activities Fund.
 

International Activities Fund

In addition to the Travel Award Program, any BCom student with demonstrated financial need can apply for funding to support their participation in an exchange through the International Activities Fund. Students must provide financial information to demonstrate financial need as this is the primary criterion on which this funding will be given. HSBC International Business Award

Field of Study: Business

Value: $10,000

Number: 2

Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing continuing in the third or fourth year in an undergraduate degree in the Alberta School of Business participating in study abroad. Selection based on academic standing, leadership, and additional financial costs anticipated by the study abroad program.

Hong Kong-Canada Business Association Award for Int'l Student Exchange

Field of Study: Business

Value: $750

Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third, or fourth year of a degree program in the Alberta School of Business. This award is granted in order to assist a student with the costs of undertaking study abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as part of a University of Alberta degree. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

Joseph & Melitta Kandler Scholarships for Int'l Student Exchange with Austria

Field of Study: Business

Value: $4,000 for one year of study / $2,500 for one term of study - max allocation supported by endowment is $8,500

Number: Variable

Conditions: To be awarded annually to four students, undergraduate or graduate, intending to study for at least one semester, but ideally two semesters, at the Wirtschaftsuniversitaet Vienna, Austria. Students must be either a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident.
Funded by: Endowed by Dr. Joseph Kandler, a native of Vienna, and a graduate of the Hochschule fuer Welthandel, now named Wirtschaftsuniversitaet, Vienna (WU). In 2008 he was recognized as an Honorary Citizen of the Wirtschaftsuniversitaet at a special function in Vienna. Dr. Kandler is a former member of the Senate and Board of Governors of the University of Alberta. Melitta Kandler began her studies at the University of Graz, Austria and graduated with an MA from the University of Alberta.

Yuichi Kurimoto Memorial Awards

Field of Study: Bachelor of Commerce

Value: Variable, maximum allocation is $73,500/year

Number: Variable

Conditions: Awarded to student(s) with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree who have demonstrated interest in Japan. Selection based on academic standing with preference given to students with satisfactory Japanese language proficiency. Successful applicant(s) are encouraged to use this scholarship to study at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration in Aichi or at another Japanese university, Japanese company, and/or Japanese business organization.
Funded by: Endowed by Hiroshi Kurimoto, President, Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration in memory of Yuichi Kurimoto, first Japanese native son to earn a degree at the University of Alberta. The Award was also established in honour of the 40th Anniversary of Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration and celebrates the close partnership Nagoya and the University of Alberta have enjoyed over the past forty years.

Storey Family International Exchange Award

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: Awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or greater enrolled in any year of a Bachelor of Commerce in the Alberta School of Business.. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to students who have submitted an application for a Fall/Winter International Exchange approved by the Undergraduate Programs Office. Part-time students are also eligible to receive this award.

Yeo Family International Exchange Award in Business

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: Awarded to a student with a GPA of 3.0 or greater enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree in the Alberta School of Business who has been approved for a Fall/Winter International Exchange. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated involvement in community and/or social organizations. Part-time students are eligible to receive this award.

Dr. Michael Gibbins International Study Award

Field of Study: Accounting

Value: $1,250

Number: 1

Conditions: Awarded to a full-time or part-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Commerce with a major or minor in Accounting who intends to study abroad. Selection based on academic standing.
Funded by: Endowed by the Alberta School of Business and the CPA Education Foundation

Ivanhoe Cambridge Retailing Studies Travel Award

Field of Study: Marketing

Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing in any year of an undergraduate degree at the Alberta School of Business participating in a faculty-approved exchange. Selection based on academic standing and the completion of at least three units of course weight in retail marketing.

University-wide Awards

Sandy Mactaggart Award
Field of Study: Open
Value: up to $20,000

Number: Variable
Conditions: The Sandy Mactaggart Award is given to University of Alberta undergraduate or graduate students to assist them in undertaking study abroad for one or more semesters in Asia as part of a University of Alberta degree. 
Candidates must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students in satisfactory academic standing and have submitted a formal application for exchange demonstrating that you are planning to study in Asia for at least one semester. Candidates must also demonstrate ability to benefit from pursuing academic studies in Asia, show an interest in learning more about Asian peoples and cultures, and show an interest in fostering international understanding.
Preference will be given to applicants wanting to study at the universities that have established formal exchange agreements with the University of Alberta, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Thammasat University in Thailand and Nanyang Technical University, Singapore.

Funded by: This award was created to honor Sandy A Mactaggart for his many contributions to the University of Alberta. Mr Mactaggart spent ten years on the Board of Governors, four years as Chancellor and Chair of the Senate, and six months as Interim Chair of the Board.

Education Abroad Awards

The Education Abroad Programs Office offers a number of awards and funding opportunities for University of Alberta undergraduate and graduate students participating on formal study abroad programs, including the following, although this is not an exhaustive list. The application deadline for each of the below are set for January 30, 2019.


The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research also administers several awards on the faculty and department levels open to MBA participants.

Export Development Canada (EDC) International Business Scholarships

EDC’s scholarship program offers up to 30 scholarships of $4,000 annually to students enrolled in a program focused on international business, finance, economics, or a combination of business with environmental/sustainability studies. Application deadline is February 15, 2019.
