Purpose:
To provide students with an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to and learn about the economic environment and business practices in China in an experiential way. The learning focus will be on the current business conditions and international management issues relating to China.

Course Description:
This course introduces students to the business conditions, culture and practices in China. Issues such as government-business relations, economic trends, current business trends, and doing business in China will be covered. BUEC 444 (China) is meant as an introductory course on the PRC and will focus not only on economic and business practices, but will put a heavy emphasis on the cultural, historical and social influences that shape those practices. It is intended to provide perspective to cross-cultural business and benefit those without a strong existing understanding or background of those aspects of China.
Students will be required to examine a topic of personal interest through a research paper. Please review the BUEC 444 (China) Course Outline - 2019 for more information.
Course Content:
1. Lectures from course instructor during the semester
2. Research paper at the end of semester
3. Participation in tour activities
4. Lectures from host Chinese partners during the tour
Course Schedule:
Lectures and preparatory sessions for the classroom portion of this course (BUEC 444) are scheduled in the Winter 2019 academic term (January - April) and will meet approximately three or four times on Saturday morning/afternoons at the Alberta School of Business. All participants are expected to attend these sessions. The on-site study tour portion of the course will be in mainland China in May, 2019.

About the Instructor
Dr. Edy Wong is the Associate Dean International at the Alberta School of Business and the University's foremost expert on China. He has been active in China business since the early 1990's, having founded businesses and joint venture investments in China & Hong Kong and held directorship or advisory positions in numerous Chinese capital, manufacturing & supply chain management firms. Dr. Wong is currently a Director on the Board of the Edmonton Metropolitan Regional Economic Development Company and regularly works with various government departments to promote Alberta businesses to Asia. He is the former president of the Hong Kong - Canada Business Association (Edmonton) and has served as advisor to various associations and companies in both Canada and China. Dr. Wong travels extensively in Asia and has developed an extensive business network throughout the region. He is founder of the Executive Training Program for senior Chinese government officials & business executives at the Alberta School of Business and was instrumental to the development of the Master of Financial Management program in China by the University of Alberta. Dr. Wong has been a visiting professor at several top Chinese universities as well as the China Academy of Governance (a State Council training institute), and a regular lecturer at the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (a CPC training body).
