What is the ASB/ECFAS Investment Research Competition?

It is contest between teams made up of University of Alberta students who research a designated publicly traded company, prepare a brief written report on that company, and present results to judges, all of whom are CFA Charterholders. The report/presentation will make and defend an investment recommendation (i.e. Buy, Sell, or Hold), including a stock price target to be achieved over a 12-month horizon.

Students/Teams will be judged on the quality of their analysis and presentation. Top placing teams will be awarded REAL MONEY.

Who can participate? Who cannot?

  • Full-time students at the University of Alberta whose program requires the completion of courses from the Alberta School of Business`s Department of Finance and Management Science. Also, full-time students of Business Administration at NAIT and full-time students of Business Management at MacEwan University may also participate. All students must have, at a minimum, completed introductory finance and accounting courses. Eligible students may form teams of up to three members.
  • Students who have ever been employed in a role whose primary duty was fundamental company valuation may not participate. CFA Charterholders are also ineligible.

How much is the prize money?

1st place team:   $2,500
2nd place team:  $1,000
3rd place team:  $500


What’s the time-line?

Here’s a tentative schedule: On February 12 the name of the company and some related information will be released to students. On March 7 a brief written submission will be due. On March 12 all presentations will be made and prizes awarded. Also during March, at dates to be determined, we have tentatively planned a session with Mr. Keith Walton, Portfolio Manager, Conviction Equities at AIMCo on Valuation.

What else do I need to know right now?

Competition organizers reserve the right to cancel the competition should they determine that there are an insufficient number of registered teams. This decision will be made on or before February 12, 2016.

Competition organizers also reserve the right to alter the times of events noted herein as “tentative.”
