Financial Support

The University of Alberta administers over $28 million in scholarships, awards, bursaries, and emergency loans to undergraduate students each year. Additional funding and resources are also available from external sources.

If you’re not sure what type of financial support you are seeking or are eligible for, set up a meeting with one of the student financial support advisors through Student Connect, in the Office of the Registrar.

Bursaries

Bursaries are funds for students in financial need. Bursaries, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid. You can apply for bursaries at various times throughout the academic year. Check out the Office of the Registrar's website for more information on bursaries.

Emergency Funding

You can apply for emergency funding if you have encountered a sudden financial shortfall or unexpected expenses. The Emergency Student Loans program offers short-term, interest-free loans designed to cover essential living expenses, such as rent or groceries (they cannot be used to pay for university tuition or fees). Unlike bursaries, emergency loans must be repaid. Check out the Office of the Registrar's website for more information on emergency funding.

Student Loans

Student loans are administered by the provincial and federal governments. Student loans are interest-free and payment-free during the period of study, followed by a six-month grace period, and are repayable after that time. Check out the Office of the Registrar's website for more information on student loans.
