Intramural Sports Programs are sport leagues and special events run by students for students, staff, faculty, and community members. Reporting to the Student-Led Activities Program Supervisor, with direct support from Intramural Sports Programs Recreation Facilitators and Intramural Sports Program Coordinator; the Activity Moderator is a student position responsible for on-the-ground officiating of our various Intramural Sports programming. This includes the oversight of officiating, responding to in game issues, overall efficiency of game play, positive participant interaction, and helping to create an overall positive participant experience.

We are seeking officials for the following sports:

• Basketball
• Dodgeball
• Futsal, Indoor
• Hockey, Ball
• Hockey, Ice
• Soccer, Indoor
• Soccer, Outdoor
• Water Polo, Innertube

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff and our student Recreation Facilitators, this position will gain:

• Increase knowledge of CCR and it’s many different program offerings
• Demonstrate a complete understanding of the sport and its rules

Position Responsibilities

• Officiate and oversee gameplay and ensure all rules are being followed in the appropriate manner
• Conduct sport programs in a professional and organized manner
• Represent Campus & Community Recreation as the face for Intramural Sport Programming using excellent officiating and customer service skills.
• Represent Campus & Community Recreation during Intramural game nights or weekend shifts
• Ongoing email communication with fellow Intramural staff
• Assist in coordinating first aid response with the Activity Monitor on duty and assist in completing appropriate documentation if necessary
• Scorekeeping and/or timekeeping
• Set-up and take-down of equipment
• Respond to participant conflicts in accordance with Intramural policies and procedures
• Effectively communicate with Recreation Facilitators and Activity Monitors
• Adhere to and implement Campus & Community Recreation policies and procedures in a fair and prudent manner
• Commit to inclusivity and respect for all colleagues and players

Working Conditions 

Physical Demands:

• Assist with set-up and take-down of equipment
• Providing First Aid as needed

Work Environment: 

• Indoor and outdoor environment
• May work in extreme conditions on a limited basis (snow and cold temperatures, sun and hot temperatures)
• Noise is expected during game play
• Areas may be slippery (pool deck, ice rink), or muddy (outdoor fields, diamonds) etc.

Qualifications/Expectations:

• Selected applicants need to be enrolled at the University of Alberta in the 2023-2024 academic year as a full-time student.
• Be available to work flexible hours including some evenings, occasional weekends, and daytime hours (school breaks, statutory holidays, exams are off).
• Experience (as a player and/or Referee) and knowledge of the rules within the sport you are applying to officiate
• Certified as a Referee / Official by the respective Provincial Sport Organization considered an asset
• Current Standard First Aid (within the last 3 years) and CPR C (within the last year) certification
