Position: Instructor / Facility Monitor (Climbing Centre)
Employment Dates: May, 2023 to August, 2024
Number of Positions: To be determined
Compensation: $18.18 to $20.20 / hour - based on performance and experience
Benefits: 4% vacation pay, 3.46% stat pay; 1.5 premium
Hours: 8-20 hours a week

This position is a member of the Campus & Community Recreation Team. Campus & Community Recreation (CCR) offers programs, services and facilities aimed to meet the needs and interests of the broad range of communities that we serve. The role of CCR is to support our communities (students, staff, Faculty and community members) to explore and enhance their physical, mental, and emotional well-being through physical and social activity. We strongly believe in the power of recreational activities to support these needs. CCR is more than just a source of activity and event opportunities, it is also an excellent source of employment training and experience.

This position will be based out of the Wilson Climbing Centre. The Wilson Climbing Centre is a brand new modern climbing structure. It was designed in an iconic purpose-built building creating a new gateway to the University of Alberta's North Campus. We are driven by a passion for climbing and are committed to promoting physical activity as a healthy lifetime pursuit.

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff, indoor Climbing Gym Instructors provide facilitation, instruction, and day to day supervision of the Climbing Centre during programs, classes, camps, group bookings, and public drop in hours. Adapting lesson plans/curriculums to safely instruct specific populations (differing in age, climbing experience, and fitness levels) is a key requirement of the position. Patron education and implementation of facility rules/regulations is another ongoing responsibility of technical climbing gym instructors. As experts on safety and mitigating risk in indoor climbing environments, Technical Climbing Gym Instructors also perform routine maintenance checks to ensure optimal functionality of climbing gym equipment.

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff, this position will gain:

  • Experience as first point of contact for all patron instruction of sport specific skills
  • Experience in implementation of facility rules and regulations
  • Experience educating patrons about how to safely perform indoor climbing
  • Experience allocating specific spaces for climbing instruction
  • Experience working as member of a multidisciplinary climbing team (which includes other instructors, front desk staff, route setters, non-technical instructors, full time staff, patrons, and other positions)
  • Experience monitoring a recreation facility and equipment for any maintenance/safety issues
  • Experience mitigating risk in extremely busy environment
  • Experience proctoring basic competency checks for safe highwall climbing
  • Experience mentoring non-technical instructors
  • Experience providing orientations to new climbers (who have never used the facility before)

Position Responsibilities

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff

  • Day to Day supervision of all climbers and enforcement of facility rules/regulations of the Climbing Centre during open hours
  • Provide safe climbing instruction including basic climbing movement, lead and top rope belay skills, and spotting techniques
  • Adapt lesson plans/program curriculums to suit the needs of registered participants
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on climbing equipment
  • Supervise groups ranging from children to adults with a wide variety of ability levels
  • Belaying for large groups using a mechanical assist braking device (gri-gri)
  • Ensure the safety of clients at all times by monitoring the Climbing Centre’s rules of conduct
  • Administer Assumption of Risk and Waiver of Liability forms to climbing participants
  • Administer Top Rope and Lead Belay Tests and provide new customers with Facility Safety Orientations
  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility
  • Manage all equipment necessary for the set up and take down for each group
  • Ensure Climbing Centre gear storage areas, floor space is clean, safe and organized
  • Provide First Aid/CPR if necessary, promptly fill out Accident Report Forms and inform the Supervisor of such an occurrence

Qualifications/Expectations:

  • ACMG Climbing Gym Instructor Level #1 or higher mandatory
  • Standard First Aid (current within 2 years)
  • CPR level ‘C’ (current within 1 year)
  • Recent Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (within 1 year)
  • Strong communication skills and good customer relations skills
  • Lead access current at UofA Climbing Centre
  • Must love climbing!
