Position: Customer Service Representative (Climbing Centre)
Employment Dates: May, 2023 to August 2024
Number of Positions: To be determined
Compensation: $16.27 to $17.10 / hour - based on performance and experience
Benefits: 4% vacation pay, 3.46% stat pay; 1.5 premium
Hours: 8-15 hours a week

This position is a member of the Campus & Community Recreation Team. Campus & Community Recreation (CCR) offers programs, services and facilities aimed to meet the needs and interests of the broad range of communities that we serve. The role of CCR is to support our communities (students, staff, Faculty and community members) to explore and enhance their physical, mental, and emotional well-being through physical and social activity. We strongly believe in the power of recreational activities to support these needs. CCR is more than just a source of activity and event opportunities, it is also an excellent source of employment training and experience.

This position will be based out of the Wilson Climbing Centre. The Wilson Climbing Centre is a brand new modern climbing structure. It was designed in an iconic purpose-built building creating a new gateway to the University of Alberta's North Campus. We are driven by a passion for climbing and are committed to promoting physical activity as a healthy lifetime pursuit.

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff, customer Service personnel are responsible for the supervision of the Climbing Centre during drop in hours. Customer Service employees act as an ambassador for the University of Alberta, with the Climbing Centre. The provision of a safe, clean, accessible climbing environment is their primary responsibility; along with cash handling, closing duties and administration of waivers and orientations for new clients.

Learning Opportunities

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff, this position will gain:

  • Experience cash handling and Point of Sale transactions
  • Experience educating patrons about facility rules/regulations; enforcing rules/regulations as necessary
  • Experience maintaining a clean, tidy, and safe climbing facility
  • Experience registering patrons for programs, providing withdrawal/refunds, and processing invoices
  • Experience managing all front-line customer inquiries
  • Experience working in a highly busy and noisy environment
  • Experience sharing and promoting programming not just for the climbing center, but the entire CCR department
  • Experience creating and modifying facility memberships
  • Experience inputting and organizing administrative documents
  • Experience distributing and monitoring equipment for wear/damage
  • Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary climbing team (which includes front desk staff, non technical instructors, technical instructors, route setters, and leadership)
  • Experience providing excellent customer service in a climbing facility


Position Responsibilities

With the support of the CCR Full Time Staff

  • Overseeing the Climbing Centre during drop-in hours
  • Administering waivers and Access Agreement forms to new climbers
  • Signing in users during drop in times, selling term/ punch passes and checking for Bouldering, Top Rope or Lead accessibility in the POS – Intelli system
  • Providing Bouldering and High Wall orientations to new facility users
  • Answering the phone to respond to client’s inquiries
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Climbing Centre and ensure users are following the Rules and Regulations of the Climbing Centre
  • Closing duties; including cash out, cleaning responsibilities, lock up and to communicate to the Supervisor any pertinent issues that arose during their shift
  • Attend all in-services and staff meetings
  • All duties outlined in the Customer Service job description

Qualifications/Expectations:

  • Standard First Aid (current within 2 years)
  • CPR level ‘C’ (current within 1 year)
  • Current Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (current within 1 year)
  • Trained in Intelli preferable but, not necessary
  • Customer Service skills and strong communication skills
  • Cash handling skills and experience with processing cheques, debit and credit cards
  • Good people skills and contagious enthusiasm for climbing
