Compensation: starting rate $16.63/hour
Benefits: 4% vacation pay, 3.46% stat pay; 1.5 premium
Hours: 12-15 hours a week

Reporting to the Student-Led Activities Program Supervisor, with direct support from the Intramural Sports Program Coordinator, the Intramural Sports are sport leagues run by students for students, staff, Faculty and community members. Intramurals are an opportunity to play with friends―old and new―in an environment that celebrates teamwork, mutual respect and, most of all, fun! Our mission is to improve student life through sport, plain and simple!

The Intramural Sports Program Recreation Facilitator position is responsible for leading the implementation of certain Sport Leagues, Tournaments, and Special Events that are assigned to each Recreation Facilitator! There are many different aspects that go into running a successful league and the Recreation Facilitator will have a chance to oversee all of these, such as; scheduling, staff management, program planning, promotion, and much more. We will look to use the Recreation Facilitator’s current skill set to make our leagues the best they can be, while helping to develop new skills along the way.

Position Responsibilities

With guidance and support the Intramural & Club Sports Supervisor and Club Sports Program Coordinator, this position will:

  • Build positive rapport and connections with participants
  • Provide day to day administrative assistance in coordinating intramural leagues and special events
  • Develop and initiate program plans
  • Assess and evaluate program offerings
  • Assist in the scheduling and the monitoring of intramural leagues and events
  • Assists with program participation statistics, program evaluation documents and reports
  • Assist with league and special event set up, takedown, oversight and execution, where applicable.
  • Guide, train and mentor part-time student staff and practicum students
  • Organize and attend meetings as required; serve on committees and lead specialization areas as required
  • Perform administrative or office duty tasks
  • Ensure the safety of all participants at all times
  • Adhere to intramural league and special event policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Facilitate appropriate facility and equipment usage and adherence to rules
  • Support intramural risk management and mitigation plans
  • Adhere to and implement Campus and Community Recreation policies and procedures in a fair, prudent and professional manner
  • Attend mandatory Recreation Facilitator meetings, training / orientation sessions, and promotional opportunities
  • Serve as a Campus & Community Recreation and University of Alberta Ambassador while at work and away or when on or off duty
  • Assist the Program Coordinator and/or Program Supervisor upon request

Working Conditions 

Physical Demands:
  • Assist with set-up and take-down of equipment
  • Providing First Aid as needed
Work Environment:
  • Indoor and outdoor environment
  • May work in extreme conditions on a limited basis (snow and cold temperatures, sun and hot temperatures)
  • Noise is expected during game play
  • Areas may be slippery (pool deck, ice rink), or muddy (outdoor fields, diamonds) etc.
  • Time commitment will be approximately 5-10 hours per week, primarily evenings

Qualifications/Expectations:

  • Selected applicants need to be enrolled at the University of Alberta in the 2023-2024 academic year as a full-time student
  • Be available to work flexible hours including some evenings, occasional weekends, and daytime hours (school breaks, statutory holidays, exams are off)
  • Must be able to work cohesively with a team as well as independently
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate positive leadership qualities
  • Experience with customer service and conflict resolution
  • A dynamic individual who is eager and enthusiastic and is able to motivate his/her peers to participate in our programs
  • Must be goal-oriented and take initiative
  • Presents a professional appearance and attitude
  • Knowledge of sport, recreation, wellness programs and/or event management is an asset
  • Knowledge of computers and web-based programs is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid (within the last 3 years) and CPR C (within the last year) certification
