Wilson Climbing Centre presents Rope Rumble 2017

The Wilson Climbing Centre will be hosting ROPE RUMBLE on April 8, 2017!

Jon Kramer - 27 February 2017

Regional Youth and Open Difficulty Competition

For the third year running, the Wilson Climbing Centre will be hosting ROPE RUMBLE on April 8, 2017. Rope Rumble is an Alberta Climbing Association (ACA) youth and open lead climbing event that will see climbers from all over the province competing to earn points toward their season total. After Rope Rumble, climbers will be heading to Canmore to compete at the provincial level, with the hope of competing in the Youth & Open Difficulty & Speed Nationals in Montreal later this spring.

Rope Rumble is a "flash format" competition, this means that each climber will have one chance to climb a pre-set route within a time limit, and will earn points based on how high they climb before falling. The routes will be set very specifically to challenge each age group, and will vary in style and difficulty for each category. Each participant will climb two routes, and their score will be the sum of their scores on each route. There is no isolation area, so the athletes can watch each other's attempts.

This will be the third ACA sanctioned difficulty competition held at the Wilson Climbing Centre since it opened in 2015. This event is sponsored by Mountain Equipment Co-op, Track & Trail, Flashed, and Snow Valley Ski Club.

The event is open to climbers of all ages and skill levels, and will be open to anyone who wishes to come in and watch the climbers. Register now by calling 780-492-2231, or online at activityreg.ualberta.ca (course code 36504)

Waivers
Each competitor must have a properly filled out Over 18 Assumption of Risk & Waiver Agreement or an Under 18 Assumption of Risk & Waiver Agreement which will need a parent or legal guardian to sign the waiver for them. We highly recommend that you print it, fill it out and bring it with you on the day of the competition.

Belaying
Not competing in the event? We need belayers, and will be hosting a FREE competition belay clinic on Sunday, March 12. Presented by Jon Kramer, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Climbing Gym Instructor Level 2, this course will outline the differences between recreational and competition belaying and all of the skills necessary to belay a lead climber in a competition.

Participants must have a minimum of 2 years lead climbing and belaying experience, and must be very comfortable with taking and catching lead falls. If you are interested in attending the clinic and belaying for the competition, you can register online at activityreg.ualberta.ca (course code 36451) or call 780-492-2231.
