Fitness Classes

There are no fitness classes on the following dates due to statutory holidays and reading week:

Strength & Conditioning
Barbell Sculpt

NEW! Get your pump on using our new TKO Cardio Pump barbells complete with weight plates. Learn basic barbell lifting techniques, build strength, endurance, gain lean body bass and improve your overall fitness by challenging all major muscle groups while you squat, press, lift and curl!

Bootcamp

This is an athletic class that targets all major muscles groups each class to maximize your time. Many different class plans will have you moving and excited to be there while you train intervals, pyramid training, and more! Ideal for those who enjoy a less choreographed fitness class. Love this? Love Functional Training.

Cardio Kickbox

This electric class combines kicking and punching movements with boot camp essentials to define and shape your body and self-confidence! Great music and a group environment that will keep you sweating and smiling.

Cardio Row

Looking to add some variety with your cardiovascular training? Try Rowing! Nothing beats it when it comes to whole-body cardio. A smaller group environment with a fitness leader guiding you through an efficient workout experience. -No previous rowing experience required

HIIT

In the spirit of Olympians, take your training up a notch or two. Intense work intervals with limited rest create a super-efficient and empowering workout. All-out effort is all relative, making this class accessible to most exercisers. Be prepared to be somewhat uncomfortable.

Functional Training

Functional Training, Circuit Training, HIIT Come and try it all! TRX, Kettlebells, cables, monkey bars! Retrain your body to move more efficiently, maximally, and become wonderfully strong. You will work in all planes of motion, at varying intensities and improve the way you feel about working out.

Kettlebell

NEW! The tried and true Kettlebell training dating back to the 1700s is now part of our Group Fitness program at the U of A! Combine dynamic functional movements to target endurance, strength, balance, and agility to build a more resilient YOU! Learn to swing, lunge, press, push, clean, lift, and more!

Olympic Lifting for the Beginner

Join our Performance Coach, Ryan (with advanced training in heavy lifting) for this 6-week introduction to the more complex movements of "clean", "jerk", and "snatch". Safe lifting mechanics, cross-training, and mobility will be practiced each session with the goal of progression. Participants are encouraged to attend Powerlifting for Beginners or have some experience with basic resistance training.

Powerlifting for Beginners

Join our Performance Coach, Ryan (with advanced training in heavy lifting) for this 6-week introduction to the original Big Three - Bench press, Deadlift, and Squat. Safe lifting mechanics, cross-training, and mobility will be practiced each session with the goal of progression. Start your semester off right by committing to safe exercise. No previous resistance training experience is required.

Row-HIIT

Combine the full-body cardio experience with the strength and power development of portable equipment strength training. This class will improve your fitness level and build your sense of community! No rowing experience is required.

Step

IT'S BACK! This workout provides a great cardio challenge on and off the step. Use one riser or two! Your instructor will be right there with you step for step, move for move showing you how it's done by adding to the sequences and to the beat.

Tabata

Sculpt

This total body workout will strengthen and re-shape your legs and abdominals while boosting metabolism for optimum fat-torching! Transform the way your body feels, bring beach confidence to everything you do. This class may include a cardiovascular component and is safe for all fitness levels.

Mind/Body Fitness
Pilates - Beginner

Pilates is a format that teaches you how to connect with your most ideal movements and muscle sequences to achieve healthier and happier anatomy. Don’t be afraid to spend some time building the knowledge and strength to live a pain-free life. Pilates promises to improve your posture and athletic performance and everything in between. Not open to drop in participation.

Pilates

Think of Pilates as intelligent movement training. Detailed cueing is used to move you through spinal flexibility and core stability, helping build a stronger and more functional you. No previous Pilates experience is required. No Drop In's permitted.

Pilates Inspired - Core Strength

A Pilates mat class that is designed to focus on strength and development. The fundamental Pilates movements will be supplemented with more powerful abdominal strength exercises.

United Yoga-Pilates

Experience the best of Vinyasa-inspired yoga and mat Pilates in one fluid class. Develop strength, flexibility, proper range of motion, and core stability by linking poses together to the gentle rhythm of your breath.

Yoga - Beginner

If the intentional, peaceful-looking souls (who clearly understand Sanskrit) funneling into yoga give you pause to joining a yoga class - look no further. Commit to yourself by starting the path to yoga alongside other new practitioners. No expectations of long hamstrings, stable shoulders, or a desire to be upside down. All that is needed is an interest in bridging the mind-body divide and an extra 50 minutes of time.

Yoga - Flow

A flowing and vigorous practice designed to increase internal heat. Similar to ashtanga, but differs in that pose and movement patterns are not predetermined. A flowing practice suitable for all abilities and experience levels.

Yoga For The Inflexible (fall course cancelled)

Improve your athletic performance by pinpointing the common limitations of joint range of motion, as well as targeting stabilizing muscles. While the practice is vigorous, it is completely accessible to all levels of fitness. Enjoy the freedom of not competing with the bendy, stretchy seasoned yogis.

Yoga - Groove Flow

Turn up the music and zone out - yoga with the pulse of the bass. Vinyasa-based practice combined with a soundtrack of upbeat and energizing pop music. Great for anybody who always has a tune running through their head.

Yoga - Hatha 50 Minutes

Postures are practiced with attention to the physical and mental experience while in the poses. Ideal for developing self-awareness and body/mind connection, calming the mind, and counteracting stress. Suitable for yogis of all abilities and experience levels.

Yoga - Natural Flow (fall course cancelled)

A fusion of hatha yoga with a natural movement practice inspired by MovNat. Movement sequences are practiced with attention to the physical and mental experience. Ideal for developing self-awareness, body/mind connection, and restoring movement capabilities naturally intended by our bodies to become a more capable human! Suitable for novice and advanced movers alike.

Yoga - Women's Only

Attention to the self is crucial for wellbeing. This less physically intense practice will allow you to identify imbalances and strive for your strength. A perfect class for women and trans-identified individuals to feel safe throughout their practice.

Spin
Spin

Ride our Spinner NXT (SCSC) or Real Ryder's (North Campus) in the energetic and motivating environment created by your instructor! Intensity is self-monitored and no inherent coordination is required making cycling classes ideal for "Newbies" and Tri-athletes. Find a leader that can bring you through the sweat to the results.

Zumba
Zumba

Interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you've got a Zumba® class!

Group Fitness Training
Small-Group Training
Small-Group Fitness Training (fall courses cancelled)

Small group fitness training is the sweet spot of keeping the fitness experience large enough to be fun and interactive while small enough to maintain the quality of modifications and progressions specific to the individuals. Participants will be guided by a certified personal trainer. Assessment and programming created to ensure measurable results achieved.

Health Moves Fitness
Health Moves Fitness (fall course cancelled)

Health Moves Fitness is a supervised exercise program catered to individuals living with one or more chronic health conditions. If you have recently completed a medically supervised rehabilitation program and are looking for the next step, Health Moves Fitness is for you! With thoughtful planning of strength, endurance, and balance training this class is designed to help you manage your pain, improve joint function, slow the progression of your condition and improve your overall quality of life. All programming is administered by a Certified Exercise Professional.

Virtual Health Moves Fitness (Fall course cancelled)

Virtual Health Moves Fitness is a group fitness program lead by a certified exercise professional in an online format. Exercise prescription is targeted towards individuals living with one or more neurological health conditions. If you have recently completed a medically supervised rehabilitation program and are looking for the next step, Virtual Health Moves Fitness is for you! With thoughtful planning of strength, endurance and balance training this class is designed to help you manage your pain, improve joint function, slow the progression of your condition and improve your overall quality of life.

Fire Fighter Fitness Training
Fire Fighter Fitness Training (Fall course cancelled)

This training course will include aerobic conditioning (loaded treadmill and vertical displacement) and firefighter-specific muscular strength, endurance, and power training. (e.g. hoisting, dragging, climbing) Participants will work towards the standard fitness requirements for the physical demands of firefighting and completion of the University of Alberta firefighter physical aptitude test.

RecMix — Fitness & Mind/Body (Student-only)


Join us every Friday for these 5-week classes. Each week you will experience a different form of fitness of mind/body class. Only $10 for students.
