We are pleased to announce the most recent publication, an outcome of the three-year research collaboration entitled “Search for a City Face: Self-representation Practices in Ukrainian Cities in the Industrial and Post-Industrial Era” between the Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program, the Kowalsky Program for the Study of Eastern Ukraine, and the Karazin University of Kharkiv.

The volume looks at theoretical and practical frameworks of contemporary urban studies as they apply to the symbolic places and cultural landscapes of five large industrial centers of Eastern Ukraine, namely, – Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Kharkiv. Symbolic places of importance are viewed as points of social interaction and innovation, dynamic systems of continuous change and negotiation of their representation.
