Requiescat in pace Andrij Makuch (March 13, 1956-January 18, 2019)

With profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dear friend and colleague Andrij Makuch.

Requiescat in pace

Andrij Makuch

March 13, 1956-January 18, 2019

News of Andrij's unexpected and untimely demise in Toronto caused much shock and grief among his friends and colleagues at the CIUS and in the Ukrainian communities of Toronto, Saskatoon, and Edmonton. Andrij's death has left a big hole in our institute and in Ukrainian studies in Canada in general. It will be hard to fill. For over thirty years Andrij contributed immeasurably to the CIUS's research, editorial, and publishing activities as a manuscript editor and coauthor of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine; the senior editor of www.encyclopediaofUkraine; the research co-ordinator of the Peter and Doris Kule Ukrainian Canadian Studies Centre; and the associate director of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium in charge of research and publications.

Andrij was the third son born to the late Rev. Ivan and Kateryna Makuch. He grew up in Lethbridge and Victoria and studied at the Universities of Victoria and Alberta. He served as president of the Ukrainian Students' Clubs at both universities (1974-75, 1975-77) and of the Ukrainian Canadian Students' Union (1977-78). Before joining the editorial staff of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine at the Toronto Office of the CIUS in 1988, Andrij lived in Saskatoon and worked as the executive director of the Saskatchewan Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee (1982-86), a researcher for the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village near Edmonton (1982-83, 1986-87), and a sessional lecturer in the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Saskatchewan (1984-87).

Besides his involvement in the Encyclopedia of Ukraine project over the past three decades, Andrij also played a prominent role in two other CIUS units-the Ukrainian Canadian Studies Program (from 2001) and the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (from 2012). Yet he also found time to serve as the secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Association for Ukrainian Studies, the last president of the Ukrainian People's Home Association in Toronto, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre.

Many of Andrij's friends and relatives came to pray for and bid farewell to him at the panakhydy held at the Cardinal Funeral Home-Annette Chapel in Toronto on January 21 and the St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton on January 23. After the funeral liturgy at that cathedral on January 24, Andrij's remains were interred at St. Michael's Cemetery in Edmonton.

In this time of great loss, Andrij's colleagues at the CIUS extend their heartfelt condolences to Andrij's daughters Larisa and Tania, his son John Zenon, and his brothers Nestor and Stephen; to their spouses, children, grandchildren, and cousins; and to Andrij's many friends and colleagues in Canada and Ukraine. All of us shall miss his good nature, sense of humour, generosity, warmth, and conviviality.

Вiчна йoму пам'ять!
