Fr. Peter Galadza, "Surprises in a Sixteenth-Century Ukrainian Wedding Rite—When the Old Becomes Modern"

DATE: THURSDAY, 19 MAY 2016
TIME: 7:00 PM
VENUE: 3-58 PEMBINA HALL, UALBERTA

Fr. Galadza will analyze the wedding rite found in a sixteenth-century western Ukrainian euchology (trebnyk, or book of rites). Especially from the perspective of present-day usage, the rite is significantly different, with many fascinating features. This trebnyk is the first in a series of manuscripts that have been transcribed for the Slavonic-English Analytical Catalogue of Liturgical Manuscripts in Ukrainian Repositories (SEACLMUR), compiled by Fr. Galadza and supported by a major grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The presentation will include colourful visuals.

Fr. Peter Galadza (PhD) is Kule Family Professor of Liturgy at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, Saint Paul University, Ottawa, and the Institute’s acting director. He is a former Harvard University fellow (Dumbarton Oaks, 2003–4) and past president of the international Society of Oriental Liturgy.
