The decade bookended by the Orange Revolution (2004-05) and the Maidan Revolution of Dignity (2013-14) in Ukraine had a global impact. In Kyiv, a new generation is mining past forms in local artistic vaults, aiming to reflect upon the 20th century while innovating a visual language that can face the new challenges of the 21st. The presentation will draw upon over ten years of research- including first-hand interviews, participatory observation, exhibits, and academic exchanges with art collectives, gender studies experts, activists, media, tech and science experts, NGOs, and other leaders in Ukraine's cultural and educational spheres-in order to explore the intersection of local and global discourses around concepts of censorship and human rights.
Dr. Jessica Zychowicz is a Stasiuk Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. She was recently a Fulbright Scholar (2017-18) based at the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy." Her monograph, Superfluous Women: Feminism, Art, and Revolution in 21st-Century Ukraine, is in progress at the University of Toronto Press. She also co-edits a series on questions of race and post-colonialism for the scholarly journal Krytyka. Dr. Zychowicz completed her Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 2016, and a term as Jacyk Fellow at the University of Toronto Munk School of Global Affairs.
