DATE: FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2020 TIME: 7:00 P.M. VENUE: 3-58 PEMBINA HALL, UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

18 January 2020

This lecture is devoted to a little-known subject in the history of Ukrainian sociolinguistics: development of the societal function of the Ukrainian language in the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Professor Matsyuk will present an analysis based on government records, memoirs, diaries, and letters, as well as essays on language by political commentators of the period. The results will be applied to the contemporary linguistic situation and language policies, revealing the role of different social groups and of the authorities (church and secular) in the process of Ukrainianization.

Halyna Matsyuk has a Ph.D. in Linguistics and is a professor at the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv. Her areas of interest include Ukrainian terminology, history of Ukrainian linguistics, theory and history of sociolinguistics, onomastics, political communication, and the methodology of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. She is the author of several books, including her most recent monograph, published in 2019, on the semantics, syntax, and pragmatics of language in society.
