Let's Talk Cancer Research is a unique day-long event that is free and accessible to all Grade 11 and 12 students. It is hosted by Let's Talk Science and the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) at the University of Alberta. The goal of this event is to introduce high school students to the field of cancer biology and to make it accessible through engaging activities and demos run by experts in the field.
We covered the challenges of researching what goes wrong when cancer arises, methods to slow down the growth of cancer and drug discovery for fighting cancer. We brought these students into contact with researchers in this field and provided hands on activities related to techniques used by cancer researchers: DNA analysis, cellular imaging of normal and cancer cells, histological/pathological diagnosis of cancer, the use of pre-clinical models to better understand cancer, and a demonstration of the beneficial use of novel drugs. This event was held at the University of Alberta on March 27, 2015.
