Career Management & Distance Interviews

Distance Interviews

During COVID-19, distance interviews are becoming the norm. These interviews are conducted over the phone or video chat services, such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, or Skype.

When preparing for a distance interview, consider the following:

Preparing for your interview

  • Dress as you would for an in-person interview (yes, we encourage you to wear pants)
  • Choose a quiet, non-distracting spot for your interview.
  • In front of blank wall or bookshelf.
  • Check what is behind you and around you.
  • Do not sit with a window directly behind you.
  • It's important that you still prepare as you would for an in-person interview.
  • It may help you to prepare notes or coloured cue cards in advance. These can remind you of important points you want to mention and questions you want to answer.
  • Be ready for the interview 5-10 minutes in advance.

  • Test out the technology in advance, especially if you haven't used it before.
  • Find out where in your home has the strongest wifi connection.
  • Check if your phone has a better camera than your computer. If it does, you may want to use it instead of your computer.
  • Plug in your device during the interview - video chats often use a lot of power.
