CTL Lunch and Learn

Bring your lunch and join in some casual and inspiring teaching conversation with your peers! The format of these sessions is:

  • 12:00-12:10 arrive, casual conversation amongst those present
  • 12:10-12:50 presentation by a UofA faculty member on a teaching and learning topic
  • 12:50-1:20 opportunity for further discussion for those who would like to stay longer.

In this CTL Lunch and Learn, organized and facilitated by Dr. Zhi Jones from UAlberta International, Drs. Sandra Rein (Augustana), Sven Anders (ALES), and Audrey Reid (Science) discuss their experiences teaching abroad; their perspectives on the benefits and challenges of teaching and learning abroad; and, reflect on students' overall learning outcomes.

The Resilient Classroom

While our learners are indeed adults who pay tuition to study in our course, it is no secret that some students resist learning both indirectly and directly in classroom interactions. The antidote to student resistance is building resilience for learning among our students. In this CTL Lunch and Learn, Associate Director, Neil Haave and Senior Educational Developer, Cosette Lemelin will provide opportunities for discussion on instructors' experiences of resistance and on concrete suggestions for teaching practices, policies, and conversations to build students' resilience in the face of mistakes, imperfect test scores, poor grades, or shy academic discussions.

Gamification for Learning

Jessica Ley, an Instructional Designer in the Faculty of Nursing, will share how they use game elements in their credit and non-credit eClass courses to increase motivation and engagement. Jessica will share examples of gamified learning experiences and the feedback received from instructors and students along the way. By the end of this session, you will walk away with a solid understanding of what gamification is and how you can use simple tools built right into eClass to begin your own gamification journey.

Better Writing through AI: Online writing tools

Dr. Roger Graves, Director of the Writing Across the Curriculum program, will provide an overview of online writing tools and how they can improve student (and faculty!) writing outcomes.

Banishing Boredom: It takes Both Instructors and Students

Dr. Lia Daniels from the Faculty of Education will be providing an overview of common sources of boredom and misperceptions about how to move students through the "boring" parts of learning. Participants will be invited to share their experiences of trying to combat student boredom and provided with strategies applicable to both instructors and students.

Improving Student Learning Through Metacognition
