Open Pedagogy Talks
Overview
The Open Pedagogy Talks is a series of 15-minute talks delivered by educators and students who are engaged in open pedagogy and learning, utilizing open educational resources, and integrating open access materials and strategies in higher education. The purpose of these talks is to create an accessible, virtual space for educators and learners to engage in conversations about open pedagogies. We encourage interested presenters to co-present sessions with students when possible.
Format
There will be 4 speakers per session, per day, for a total of 16 speakers over the course of 4 days. Speakers will have a 15-minute session in which they can discuss their practice and take questions from participants.
Proposal Review and Scheduling
Proposals will be reviewed by the steering committee and speakers will be notified by January 10, 2022. The steering committee will coordinate with speakers to determine streams, dates and times for their talks.

Our Understanding of Open Educational Practices (OEP)
The purpose of these talks is to create an accessible, virtual space for educators and learners to engage in conversations about open educational practices and bring more awareness to opportunities to mobilize OEPs in diverse educational contexts. For these talks, we share Paskevicius’ (2017) understanding of OEPs:
Teaching and learning practices where openness is enacted within all aspects of instructional practice; including the design of learning outcomes, the selection of teaching resources, and the planning of activities and assessment. OEP engage both faculty and students with the use and creation of OER, … and support participatory student-directed projects.
Mobilizing OEPs
Some of the ways that you may be engaged in open educational practices are:
- Working with students as partners to co-design digital learning materials and considering creative commons licensing.
- Sharing resources and materials with colleagues through teaching and learning networks.
- Selecting open-access course materials that can be utilized by students regardless of their location.
- Adopting, adapting, creating, and sharing new learning materials within and beyond institutions.
These are just a few examples of open educational practices that are being mobilized at our institutions. We are excited to invite educators and students to share their practices and experiences with OEPs in these talks.
Streams
There are four streams for the lightning talks. Presenters are invited to indicate which stream(s) their talk best aligns with on their proposal. Participants will be able to choose which talks and streams that they want to engage with upon registration.
Exploring Open Pedagogy
These talks focus on the foundations of open pedagogy, why it has been impactful in higher education, and examples of open pedagogy in higher education. Some related topics include:
- How open pedagogy enhances and expands teaching approaches.
- Teaching approaches and related pedagogies.
- Exploring the key principles of open pedagogy and co-creation of knowledge.
- Collaborating with students to create student-centered learning opportunities.
Instructional Design for Open Pedagogy
These talks focus on integrating open pedagogy into current and future instructional design. Some related topics include:
- Integrating open pedagogy strategies into pre-existing courses.
- Instructional re/design of courses based on open pedagogy principles.
- Using learning technologies to promote open learning in face-to-face, blended, and online courses.
Designing Open Educational Resources
These talks focus on creating, identifying, using, and sharing open educational resources in higher education. Some related topics include:
- Increasing accessibility through the use of open educational resources.
- Selecting the most suitable open educational resources for your course.
- Working with students as partners to develop open educational resources.
- Distributing open educational resources to teaching and learning networks.
Open Scholarship and Research Practices
These talks focus on how educators integrate open research into their courses and scholarship of teaching and learning practices. Some related topics include:
- Engaging students as partners in course-based research projects.
- Openly accessible knowledge mobilization (e.g., sharing on institutional repository, creating online resources, open review, networked communities).
- How research and scholarship begins and impacts scholarship, teaching, and learning more broadly.
- Research interconnections between courses, programs, community.
