CTL Student Associates Program

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invites undergraduate and graduate students to join us in working to communicate, evaluate, and enhance CTL’s programs and activities. Students will gain valuable teaching and research-related knowledge by contributing to projects such as:
  • Contribute to CTL’s marketing and communications strategies by developing web and social media content which connects UofA teaching and learning initiatives to the evidence-based literature on best practices in teaching and learning
  • Contribute to research assessing CTL’s programs and services
  • Conduct literature searches related to CTL’s work

CTL provides a supportive and collegial environment where students are mentored by their CTL project lead(s). Undergraduate students are typically hired for one semester at a time and graduate students are typically hired for one year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Full-time student at the University of Alberta
  • Flexibility to attend regular team meetings
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate students
  • General knowledge of learning theories and teaching best practices appropriate to higher education, achieved through experience, coursework, or the FGSR Teaching and Learning Program
  • Experience with quantitative or qualitative research methods
  • Ability to take directions and work as a team member
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and provide follow-up in a timely and effective manner
  • An interest in learning about and/or contributing to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate students 
  • Experience developing web and social media content in educational and/or professional contexts
  • Experience with literature searches and developing annotated bibliographies
  • Ability to take directions and work as a team member
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and provide follow-up
  • An interest in learning about teaching and learning in higher education

Available Positions

Full-time Undergraduate Summer Student, 2017

Similar to the Roger S. Smith awards, this summer studentship is worth $5000, to cover 15 weeks of research-based activity over the summer. The main role of this position will be to conduct literature and web searches about teaching excellence and teaching award criteria in higher education, and do some thematic analysis. Thus, a demonstrated interest in teaching and learning and an ability to read and analyze education-related literature will be an asset. Other research tasks related to developing and assessing CTL’s programs and services may be assigned as time allows.

Part-time Graduate Student Research Associate (8-12 hours per week)

This research associate position is available for up to one year to assist with developing an online teaching and learning database for past and current CTL-supported projects, and to assist with the development and deployment of an institutional survey of teaching practices. Other research tasks related to developing and assessing CTL’s programs and services may be assigned as time allows.
