Materials characterization and processing is the study of the fundamental building blocks of materials, particularly the relationship between their structure, properties, and processing.
Dr. Hao Zhang was recognized by Science Magazine for his recently published paper on the nature of grain boundaries. According to Zhang’s simulations of grain boundaries in high-temperature environments, the atoms move like those in glass-forming liquids. “I believe this can help to explain why mobility of these atoms is dependent on the type of stress they are experiencing,” says Zhang. “This can make a big difference when you are trying to create accurate models of material behaviour.”
String-like cooperative motion within grain boundary region. The red atoms represent upper and lower crystal grains (displaced vertically to aid viewing) and the atoms with arrows indicate the atoms involved in the cooperative motion within a time interval dt.
